Jim's Knitting Companion Program
This clever freeware program allows you to convert hand knit patterns, or
other machine knit patterns.
First things first. This little program took the most part of
two midnight oil burning sessions. It was written using Borland's Delphi version
2.0. It will run on an IBM compatible PC running Microsoft Windows 3.1, 3.11,
95 and 98 (I have it on my ME and XP computers, too--Cara).
Sorry, it doesn't do DOS or MAC.

----------------------------------
TO INSTALL:
Unzip the program knitcomp800.zip or knitcomp1024.zip and into any directory.
To run the program, double click (or whatever your Window's operating system
requires to run a program) on the knitcomp.exe file. The title page will appear
on your screen. To continue into the program, select the measurement (inches
or centimeters) that you want to work with. This brings up the data input page.
MAKING ENTRIES IN INCHES:
If you want to enter a decimal fraction it must be in decimal format, i.e.,
enter '3.5' NOT '3-1/2'. The program was written to give readouts in mixed numbers
which is easier to read for most folks. The readout will be in the format of
'3-1/2'.
MAKING ENTRIES IN CENTIMETERS:
These entries are made in the same manner as inches; however, the readouts will
also be in decimal fractions and not mixed numbers; i.e.; 3.5. The program page
is broken down into three data entry/calculation areas.
1. PATTERN GAUGE:
Information concerning the pattern that you want to convert to your gauge is
entered here. This area contains four entry boxes, and a REFRESH button.
a. STITCHES: Enter the number of stitches given in the pattern gauge.
b. INCHES or CENTIMETERS: This box has a default of 4 if no entry is made
and you have selected to work in inches. It has a default value of 10 if you
selectec to work in centimeters. You can change it to another number. Normally
you would put in the number of inches stated in the pattern stitch gauge.
c. ROWS: Enter the number of rows (if given) in the pattern gauge.
Because most hand knit patterns use inches of knitting instead of rows, an entry
in this box is not necessary. You should leave it blank unless you know the
number of rows in the pattern gauge.
d. Another INCHES or CENTIMETERS box. Both these boxes are identical. Put
the number of inches given for the row gauge in the pattern. If you have left
the ROWS box empty, then leave this one empty also.
e. REFRESH BUTTON: Click on this button each, and every, time you make a change
in any of the Pattern Gauge entry boxes. This is necessary for the proper operation
of the program. THE PROGRAM DOES NOT MAKE AUTOMATIC CALCULATIONS ON DATA ENTRY.
YOU MUST CLICK ON THE ENTER BUTTONS WHENEVER YOU UPDATE THE ENTRY DATA.
2. SWATCH GAUGE:
This is your swatch gauge data entry boxes. All calculations in the program
use this information. So, for the proper operation of the program, you MUST
enter stitch and row information in these boxes. (The Inches boxes have a default
of 4, and the Centimeters boxes have a defaul of 10) but you can enter any number
you choose. If you are designing your own pattern from body measurements, this
is the area to complete first. YOU MUST CLICK ON THE REFRESH BUTTON WHENEVER
YOU UPDATE THE ENTRY.
3. CONVERSIONS FROM PATTERN GAUGE TO SWATCH GAUGE:
This is the area where the calculations are performed. It has three data entry
boxes and a REFRESH BUTTON.
a. STITCHES: Enter the number of stitches given in the pattern that you want
to convert to your swatch gauge. This will give the number of stitches to knit
in your gauge. It also gives you the number of inches, or centimeters that will
be knitted in your gauge.
b. ROWS: Same as STITCHES above except for rows.
c. INCHES or CENTIMETERS: This entry is used primarily for designing your
own pattern. With your swatch gauge entered in the SWATCH
GAUGE area, enter in the number of inches for your measurements. When you click
on the REFRESH button both the number of stitches and rows are given for your
swatch gauge. (NOTICE: This program does not allow for ease...For accuracy in
designing, calculate your ease before making an entry).
YOU MUST CLICK ON THE REFRESH BUTTONS WHENEVER YOU UPDATE THE ENTRY DATA.
Thank you for trying this little effort of mine. I hope it helps you in your
endeavors. Suggestions/criticisms are welcome (No flames please), but be aware
that this is a 'freeware' program. The next generation will either be shareware
or sold direct.
Questions may be directed to me at the following e-mail address. Please put
the word 'knitcomp' somewhere in your subject line.
